For unattended burial at sea services, cremated remains may be delivered in person or shipped directly to our office.

To safely ship cremated remains, you will need:

• A sift-proof inner container

• Protective cushioning material

• A durable outer shipping box

A sift-proof container is designed to prevent ashes from leaking during transit. In most cases, the temporary container or sealed bag provided by the crematorium is acceptable when securely placed inside the shipping box.

USPS® recommends consulting with a licensed funeral director if assistance is needed selecting the most appropriate shipping container.

California law requires all human remains to be properly documented and tracked, including cremated remains brought into the state or processed outside Los Angeles County. In order to perform a burial at sea in Los Angeles County, a Los Angeles County Disposition of Human Remains Permit is required.

Families may obtain this permit through one of the following options:

Option 1: Los Angeles County Vital Records Office

​

Visit the Los Angeles County Vital Records Office in person to request the permit. A certified copy of the death certificate will be required.

 

Option 2 : Licensed Funeral Home or Crematorium

​

Alternatively, you may coordinate directly with any licensed funeral home or crematorium within Los Angeles County to have the permit issued on your behalf. In most cases, this can be handled remotely, without requiring an in-person appointment.

The Los Angeles County Disposition of Human Remains Permit may be issued either through the Vital Records Office or by a licensed funeral home or crematorium.

Please ensure the completed permit is placed inside the package, as it is required for all burial at sea services.
